SBU Releases Unique Footage of Operation ‘Pautina’

On June 1, 2025, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted a large-scale special operation called “Pautina” aimed at striking the strategic aviation of the Russian Federation. This operation became one of the largest and most successful in the history of the Ukrainian special services, inflicting significant losses on the enemy and demonstrating the high level of training of Ukrainian forces.

Recently, the SBU released unique footage of this operation, allowing the public to see its progress and outcomes in detail. In this material, we will explore the key aspects of Operation “Pautina,” its preparation, execution, and consequences for the enemy.

Preparation and Execution of Operation “Pautina”

Operation “Pautina” had been in preparation for over a year and a half under the leadership of SBU Head Vasyl Maliuk. Its goal was to destroy Russia’s strategic aviation using FPV drones that were secretly transported to Russian territory. Trucks were used to conceal the drones under the roofs of small houses. At the right moment, the roofs were remotely opened, and the drones were launched at their targets.

For training the artificial intelligence that controlled the drones, decommissioned Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 bombers stored at the Poltava Museum of Long-Range and Strategic Aviation were used. This allowed the drones to effectively recognize and engage their targets.

On June 1, 2025, 117 drones were launched, striking four Russian air bases: Dyagilevo, Olenya, Ivanovo, and Belaya. These attacks became the largest in the history of the war, inflicting significant damage on Russia’s strategic aviation.

Consequences and Reactions to the Operation

According to the SBU, the operation destroyed or damaged 41 aircraft, including Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 bombers and A-50 aircraft. This represents 34% of the strategic cruise missile carriers at Russia’s main air bases. Russia’s losses are estimated at $7 billion.

Russian sources acknowledge losses but downplay their scale. According to their data, up to four Tu-95s, five Tu-22M3s, and one An-12 were lost. However, independent OSINT analysts and Western intelligence confirm significantly higher losses.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the operation “absolutely brilliant” and emphasized that it would serve as an example for future generations. He also thanked everyone who participated in its planning and execution.

Operation “Pautina” stands as a landmark event in the history of Ukrainian special services, demonstrating a high level of training and an innovative approach to combat operations. The released footage of the operation allows for a deeper understanding of its scale and significance for Ukraine’s defense. This operation not only inflicted significant losses on the enemy but also became a symbol of the resilience and professionalism of Ukraine’s defenders.
